Today’s young parents have a lot of safety devices

When I was a new mother, the products for sale in stores for baby proofing were largely play pens, outlet covers and baby gates.  The world pretty much wasn’t interested in keeping babies safe!  I can remember how discouraging and difficult it was to try to make our home safe for our babies.  Between my first child and second child I found baby-proof cabinet locks for sale in the hardware store and I was totally delighted!  I made sure to keep one cabinet unlocked and full of plastic storage containers and wooden spoons and old pots and pans for the children to play with, but all of the others had locks on them.  What a blessing those locks were!

Now new parents just have it made as far as keeping their babies safer from regulare household hazards.  I’ve found a website that has a plethora of child safety products.  Corner guards, toilet lid covers, door knob covers, refrigerator safety latches (I just bought some of those for my problem refrigerator mentioned in a previous post!) and even toilet paper roll guards!  I think that would be a great thing to have with pets in the house!  No more unrolled toilet paper strewn around!  I’m sending the link to this website to my pregnant niece -she is going to need a lot of these great safety products!

Freezer latches

One of the things that has been bugging me the most in the past year or two is the fact that we have a spare refrigerator (and a spare upright freezer) in the garage that seem to have the doors “pop open” by themselves.  I’ve noticed that when I go into the refrigerator and close the door sometimes it pops back open immediately, and sometimes the door closing makes the freezer door (to the little freezer on top) pop open just a little bit.  So I’m always careful to make SURE that both doors really ARE closed before I walk away.  I’m sure that no one else in the house is as careful about that as I am because there are been several times that I’ve had to throw away all of the food in the freezer because it had been open long enough for everything to thaw.  Well, as you can imagine I am NOT happy about throwing food away!  So I have been asking my hubby (repeatedly) to put some kind of latch on the doors to keep them from popping open.  And I am getting the “Yes dear” response for over a year now.  Time to take matters into my own hands I guess!
