Sweet treats

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

I have always had a love/hate relationship with candy.  When I was younger, I ate candy in moderation.  I guess it was because my parents kept giving me the bitter dark chocolate, telling me it was delicious candy.  Well, I don’t like dark chocolate at all!    There’s a reason it’s called “bitter” and that’s because it’s nasty!  Why else do they think the phrase “bitter feelings” means “bad feelings!”  Now milk chocolate, and semi-sweet chocolate is a different story!  Those chocolates are sweet, and I like sweet!

That’s probably largely my mother’s fault, whenever she tried to get me to eat vegetables as a child, she would sprinkle some sugar on it.  So it was only natural that I would gravitate towards sweet treats!  And I can remember my mother showing us how we could make our own Rock Candy, using a nail, string, water and sugar.  I don’t remember if she put anything else in the water!  I should look that up sometime and maybe show it to my kids!

When we would go trick-or-treating, my favorite candy was the Snickers Bar candy; my sister’s favorite was the Clark Bar.  So when we got home we would sort out our treats and trade with each other.  We always got more candy than we could possibly eat!  Oh, for the good ol’ days, when we could go from door to door and get candy!

Wifi

Last summer I used to do a little bit of traveling, and took my laptop with me so that if I got the time to get online from time to time I could try to find a free wifi spot and do some blogging or check my email, or maybe just do some browsing around.

I had heard that several places offered free wifi – Borders, Panera Bread and McDonald’s for example.  I used to go to McDonald’s a lot, so I would use their free wifi.  Since then I’ve discovered that a lot of hospitals offer free wifi as well.  I’ve heard that some libraries offer it, too.

Yesterday I went to McDonald’s for lunch and wanted to hop on the Internet.  I was disappointed to learn that McDonald’s now charges $2.95 for a two hour block of wifi access.  It’s not hard to do, you just enter your credit card number and off you go, but it is disappointing just the same.
