Eye care that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

I was reading an article in the Examiner about how Zenni Optical sells inexpensive eyeglasses for as low as $8 per pair. I have heard about Zinni Optical in the past, and wondered about how to order a pair that actually fit. I can recall how when I go to the eye doctor’s that they take measurements (like between my pupils, and my temple length) to ensure a good fit.

This article was advising the consumer that in addition to getting the eye prescription, that you need to have something called a PD number. I have never heard of that number before. Supposedly Zenni gives you directions on how to get that number yourself, but the article warns that those numbers from do-it-your-selfers are rarely correct. So I’m wondering about what a PD number is. Hmmmm – maybe the pupil distance? Now that would make sense!

I can’t recall the eye doctor ever measuring that distance as part of the normal exam. That is usally done by the person who is fitting me for glasses. So that makes me feel a little bit awkward there. I guess I’ll have to give them a call and see about getting that.

I sure could use a spare pare of computer reading glasses! Last week I acidentally left my computer reading glasses at work over the weekend – and that was a huge pain in the neck! (Literally!) And I sure don’t want to spend a fortune on them, so Zetti sounds like a good alternative.

Hey Jude

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Years ago I loved the Beatles music. It was so new and exciting, and I learned the words to all their songs. I was particularly fond of George Harrison – I don’t know why, but he just mesmerized me. Today I heard “Hey Jude” on the radio and had a great flashback to be being a kid, dancing around in my parents living room and singing along to the Beatles.

Tuesday Freebies

My horoscope said nothing about how great today was going to be. First, I went to Starbucks and they gave me a free chocolate cherry mocha coffee. They had made one for someone else who decided they didn’t want it and the barrista didn’t want to throw it away, so she asked me if i would like it. Heck, yes!

Then I went to Home Depot to get a couple of rakes for my overdue yard work and went to the self checkout. The rakes both had the bar codes on them, but the second one would not scan. the checkout display said to wait for assistance. I waited and waited and even with 4 idle workers milling about, no one came to help me. So I got a little ticked off and loudly asked “Where’s my assistance?” the clerk came and tried to scan the rake, but it didn’t work. So he went somewhere else and left me standing there along with a growing line of other impatient customers. When he came back he tried to scan it one more time. It still didn’t work. He leaned toward me and said softly, “I’m not going to charge you for this rake. It’s not your fault the scan won’t work and I’m sorry you’ve had to wait so long.” He smiled and handed me the rake – another freebie!
