I recently started a part time job at a retail store as a cashier. One of the managers there is a very nice young man. He reminds me a lot of my own sons. I like to laugh and joke with him, and he certainly seems to enjoy hanging around me. This guy would make a really great husband for some lucky young woman, and he says he is looking for a girl to settle down with and have children. The issue is that he is having trouble meeting any women who share his same high moral values. I have to agree that there are very few places young adults can go that is not a pub. I wish there was something I could do to help them out! I’ll have to think on that.

Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions this year? One of mine is to waste less food. I am apalled every week when I get ready to go to the grocery store and I rummage around the refrigerator to see what needs to be thrown out and find so much food that has been there too long to eat!

Part of the problem is that often times when I cook supper the rest of the family decides at the last minute that they aren’t going to eat dinner. Now I know I’m a good cook, but the only time I can count on everyone coming to the table is if it is take-out Chinese Food or take-out Pizza. And I am NOT ordering take-out food every time we need to eat supper! So I think that I will put the rest of the family in charge of the meal planning, the shopping, and the cooking. I’m tired of wasting time, energy, and money on trying to feed this family. As for me, well I can just fix myself a PB&J sandwich or a bowl of soup if no one cooks!

I’ve been interested in warm winter clothing ever since about 1971. That’s when I first experienced the thrill of alpine skiing. I can remember my parents buying me a great Columbia jacket to wear on the slopes. It was stylish and kept me warmer than I thought possible! I guess before I got that Columbia jacket my parents just bought me stuff that looked warm but really wasn’t warm at all. I’ve gotten a lot pickier now when picking out my winter wear!

When my niece came to live with me a few years ago I was trying to find her a warm jacket to wear and was surprised to find I still had that old jacket – still in great shape – and it fit her just fine! And I was pleased to learn that the Columbia jacket that I work back in the ’70s on the ski slopes was still as warm as ever (although too small for me now!) and that the fashion was still perfectly acceptable. It’s good to know that some things really DO last a long time!

I woke up at 2:30 am this morning and could not get back to sleep. Does that ever happen to you? It happens way too much for me! I stayed in bed until about 4 and then gave up and got out of bed. I decided to go to the grocery store about 7am and get my shopping done, but I think that was a mistake because there was only one cash register open. I really thought there would be more registers open by the time I got to them – it was 8:30am by then. And it was Wal-Mart for Pete’s sake! Just doesn’t make much sense that there would only be one register open that time of day!

My youngest son Jon is in his senior year at college. This is such an exciting time for him; he already has a job offer waiting for him in London, or a fellowship waiting for him in Boston! He is so excited to be done with the studying and homework that has been such an integral part of his life for the majority of his life.

I can’t blame him for wanting to experience life to its fullest. He has yet to have his first serious romance, has yet to need to find a way to pay his own way, has yet to be completely independent. Oh, sweet independence! I can remember wanting to be solely in charge of my own life! And now I find myself on the wrong side of fifty years old, and being melancholy for my own youthful exuberance!

I think that for Christmas I will buy Jon a casio pathfinder watch for Christmas. I think that even though watches seem to be obsolete to the younger generation, I think that giving a watch to him at this point of his life would be a loving reminder of how valuable time really is. A suggestion to cherish each hour, each day, and to live it fully.

My hubby loves chrome because it is shiny. I can’t really blame him, I like silver and gold shiny jewelry too! So for him, chrome is jewelry for his motorcycle and his truck! In the house, however, my hubby is all about stainless steel. Especially whenever we have to replace something. When we moved into this house we needed new appliances. I didn’t care what color they were, I just needed some appliances that worked! So we trotted off to the store and it became obvious that he would agree to just about anything as long as it was stainless steel!

So now that Christmas gift time is approaching I’m thinking about buying him some bloomus stainless steel fireplace accessories to set beside the fireplace in the family room. Or perhaps a nice shiny bloomus stainless steel mailbox to use as a drop box beside the garage. I’m sure he’d also love a nice bloomus stainless steel birdfeeder for the back yard!

I was taking a nap three days ago when my son came into my room and announced that my computer had been infected with the nasty malware program that calls itself “Security Tools.” What a pain in the neck that was! Fortunately I have a younger brother who lives nearby that makes his living doing IT support. So I called him and he told me that I could bring my CPU to his place and he’d fix it for me. He had to squeeze it in with his paying clients, and while he was at it he installed a bunch of new programs for me. I had to “make do” with my back-up computer in the spare bedroom while my “main computer” was at my brother’s. That was a pain in the neck, but I struggled along.

Thankfully I was able to pick up my CPU last night and bring it home. So now I’m back to almost normal, have to do a little bit of catchup bookkeeping! Whoever created that awful malware should be ashamed of themselves! I’d like to say some very strong things about/to that person, but that would ruin my “family rating” on this blog! All I CAN say is that they have created some very bad Karma, and it is well deserved bad Karma!

I’ve been thinking about expanding my ability to connect to the Internet. I’d like to get a broadband service but am concerned that I might be in a dead zone. Unfortunately I don’t know that much about broadband! I have heard that there are dead zones for them, just like with regular cell phone service. And I have been told that I need to pick the broadband service that serves the area(s) that I will be in the most. The research that I’ve done so far seems to indicate that there is no one broadband service company that serves the areas that I frequent – I would have to sign up with several services. Of course I’m not sure about that – I find it all very confusing!

I became interested in broadband when my cousin Sarah told me that she has subscribed to UK broadband while she is in England. She’s in a college program here in the states that let her study abroad for a year, and she jumped at the chance. Sarah says that her UK broadband lets her access the Internet everywhere she goes, and she thinks that it is the best invention since the personal computer! So her satisfaction with her UK broadband service has sparked my interest in trying to find a good broadband service here where I live.
